Job Title: North Carolina State Manager
Reports to: Organizing Director
Location: Remote, based in North Carolina (preferably near Raleigh or east of Raleigh).

NC State Manager Position Summary

You’ll be in charge of our work in NC. This means building relationships with local communities and organizations, finding ways to make a difference in politics and rules, and connecting NC efforts with our bigger projects. You’ll work with our team to mix different goals like saving forests, working on national campaigns, and organizing events in the region.

Location & Travel

This job is done from home, but sometimes you’ll need to travel in Eastern NC and other places in the Southeast. Travel might be about 3-4 days a month, and the organization will pay for it. You’ll also have lots of Zoom meetings and phone calls.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Planning, Reporting, and Evaluation

  • Make, use, and report on a strategic NC campaign and organizing plan.
  • Check how well the strategies and activities are working.

Building Authentic Relationships

  • Talk regularly with community members.
  • Understand community needs and priorities.
  • Work with partners and build new relationships with important groups.
  • Visit NC communities affected by wood pellet biomass production and export facilities.
  • Help community members with local efforts.
  • Lead Dogwood Alliance in NC coalitions.
  • Keep in touch with important people like elected officials and government agencies.

Building Support for the NC Campaign & Dogwood Alliance Priorities

  • Plan events to get media attention and public visibility.
  • Stay informed about issues affecting the NC campaign.


Work with the Communications & Marketing Department to:

  • Create online campaigns for Dogwood members.
  • Write blogs, emails, and plan online actions for the campaign.
  • Be the main spokesperson for media on the wood pellet industry in NC.
  • Make materials to support our movement and political work.

Management and Reporting

  • Manage consultants for the NC campaign, including 3 community organizers and the NC Lobbyist.
  • Have weekly meetings with the Organizing Director.
  • Go to weekly team meetings.
  • Help make and keep a three-month work plan and weekly priorities.
  • Make quarterly work reports for your supervisor.

Skills & Experience

The NC State Manager should have:

  • Knowledge or experience in DEI, Environmental Justice, or Racial Equity/Justice.
  • 1-3 years of organizing, coalition building, or community power building experience.
  • Managed people before (even interns, volunteers, or other organizers).
  • Lived experience in a community affected by industrial logging or biomass is a plus.

You should be good at:

  • Building relationships with different communities.
  • Communicating in various ways: writing, speaking, social media, and more.
  • Managing time and projects well, handling many things at once.
  • Being committed to environmental justice, social justice, and related movements.
  • Working as a team and also on your own.
  • Taking direction and working with many people.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is $50,000 – $60,000, depending on experience. We offer health insurance, a retirement plan, and paid time off. See a summary of our benefits here. Our pay structure may change in 2024 after a review, so the compensation range may increase.

Hiring Timeline

Our hiring team wants to have a final decision by early to mid March. The hiring manager will be the Organizing Director, Emily Zucchino.

  • Details: This task is designed to showcase your campaign planning and ideation skills. It should take less than two hours. You’ll be compensated for your time. We’ll schedule a specific two-hour window for you to complete and submit this assignment.

Final Interview: A Deeper Dive

  • Who You’ll Meet: The hiring manager, the Organizing Director of Dogwood Alliance, the Program Director, and another colleague.
  • Length: Each interview will last approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Purpose: This final interview is an opportunity for in-depth discussions about your potential role and contributions to our team.
