Dogwood Alliance is seeking to hire a Campaigns Director.

Reports To: Programs Director
Status: Full-Time, 35 hours a week, Exempt

About the Role

The Campaigns Director will handle our federal campaigns. This role involves:

  • leading campaign activities with partners and coalitions at the national and international levels
  • managing our work with the government
  • creating strategies to get the public involved

The Director will team up with other leaders to manage our campaign strategies. You’ll also do research to support Dogwood Alliance programs. You’ll coordinate with partners to share campaign findings with the public, our supporters, and the media.

Location & Travel

This is a full-time, remote job. You may travel sometimes for meetings and events. This includes regular travel to Washington, DC and partner communities in the South. We prefer candidates near Washington, DC, on the East Coast, or in the Gulf South. This job involves many Zoom meetings and phone calls.

Key Responsibilities

Directing Federal Campaigns and Political Advocacy Work

  • Lead federal level work, including online and in-person campaigns
  • Be part of coalitions and activities at the federal and international levels

Strategic Planning, Reporting, and Evaluation

  • Create, apply, and report on campaign plans with clear goals and strategies
  • Work with other directors to carry out and evaluate Dogwood’s programs
  • Stay informed about issues that affect our campaigns and strategies

Building Support for Campaigns

  • Work closely with the Digital Organizer on online campaigns
  • Engage with our online membership
  • Manage partnerships with other organizations
  • Build diverse coalitions, focusing on biomass and US forest protection
  • Make outreach materials for our campaigns and advocacy work
  • Visit wood pellet mills to gather evidence of forest destruction
  • Plan in-person events and actions
  • Work with the Grants Manager to find new funding for our campaigns

Communications

  • Recruit activists
  • Get media attention for the campaign
  • Share campaign updates across communication channels
  • Write blogs, emails, and plan online actions

Management and Reporting

  • Manage our Federal Lobbyist and Program Team’s Communications consultant
  • Have weekly meetings with the Programs Director
  • Attend team coordination meetings
  • Make a three-month work plan and set weekly priorities
  • Create quarterly work reports

Skills and Experience

You should have:

  • Deep experience in organizing and advocacy
  • A strong ability to lead and influence coalitions and groups
  • Experience in planning and executing creative and powerful campaign actions
  • Comfort with policy work as well as equity and inclusion principles

A successful candidate will have:

  • 5+ years in campaigning and advocacy
  • A strong commitment to environmental justice and building political power
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Experience in leading groups and coalitions
  • Skills in analyzing policies and strategic planning
  • A focus on results while caring for community needs
  • The ability to work well with teams and negotiate effectively

Compensation and Benefits

Hiring Timeline

The Campaigns Director job is really important. To make sure we find the best person for the job, we have an intentional hiring process. We will keep the application open until we find the right candidate. Here’s what you can expect from our hiring process.

First Step: Resume Review

  • What: The Programs Director and Director of People & Culture will review your application.

Second Step: Introductory Call

  • What: A 30-minute conversation with the Programs Director
  • Purpose: Get to know more about the job and meet the hiring manager. The manager will ask about your resume and why you’re interested in this job.

Third Step: Second-Round Interview

  • Who: Two members of the Programs team
  • What: A more detailed interview focusing on your past work and experiences. They’ll ask questions about your career and experiences. This helps them understand how you handle situations.

Final Step: Technical Assessment and Panel Interview

  • Assessment: You’ll do a task to show your skills in planning and coming up with campaign ideas. You’ll be paid for the time you spend on this task. This task will assess a candidate’s ability to plan campaigns.
  • Panel Interview: Finally, a group of Dogwood Alliance staff will interview you

    Great opportunity for a skilled and talented communicator. There once was a time but at 73 my life skills and history doing advocacy and political activities and hosting events and raising money are behind me. I’d love this job but I’m hoping you can find a much younger candidate.
