Forest defense is our best wildfire defense

Congress recently introduced a bill to expand domestic biomass. The Wildfire Reduction Market Expansion Act of 2026 argues that harvesting more forest biomass can help solve the wildfire crisis. This argument is costly and wholly unproven. Cutting down forests doesn’t prevent wildfires. Logging actually makes wildfires worse. The bill could revitalize the struggling biomass industry. It expands what the federal government considers biomass. We must act fast.

Dense, mature forests are less likely to burn. They create more canopy cover and shade. This keeps surface temperatures lower. They also buffer wind gusts that can spread flames. Dead and downed trees absorb lots of water, making them less likely to burn. Cut forests have more scrub brush that can easily ignite in a wildfire. Forest defense is our best wildfire defense.

Tell your elected official biomass is not the solution to wildfires. Oppose this legislation in favor of real and cost effective strategies.
