“Dressing” Trash Monster and collecting signatures we had a blast…
This past weekend, August 8th – 10th, a few of us from Dogwood Alliance joined the crowd of 3,000 at Trinumeral, a music festival held at Deerfields campground (twenty minutes from Asheville), to encourage participation in our No Free Refills for the forest campaign.
We set up a giant wire sculpture whom we’ve dubbed Trash Monster, a pile of dumpster salvaged fast-food packaging, and a few bottles of hand sanitizer and invited festival-goers to help us show the “fast food junkies” the monster the fast food industry has created. We began the festival with just a KFC bucket for Trash Monster’s hat, and by the end of the weekend, he was bursting with the excessive burger wrappers and beverage containers that are devastating our southern forests.
We told folks about how McDonald’s has six weeks to submit their new environmental paper packaging policy, and how we have six weeks to remind McDonald’s of their environmental responsibilities!
We are asking McDonald’s (as well as the other ten “junkies”) to reduce their packaging, to purchase paper products only from FSC certified forests, and to use a higher percentage of post-consumer recycled content. Click here to tell McDonalds to straighten up their act!

McDonald’s is the biggest fast food company in the world. They are a global giant buying lots of paper packaging from Southern forests! Click here to take action and send a message to McDondald’s.
We know that they are going to announce a new environmental paper packaging policy sometime soon. With your help we can tell them we want them to make sure that the policy is a winner. That means we have a just a matter of weeks to pressure them from all ends to make sure that they:
Increase the post-consumer recycled content in the paper packaging they use
Reduce the amount of paper packaging—so much of it is used for branding and advertising that it often serves NO essential function; and
Show a preference for FSC certified paper packaging coming from sustainably managed forests.
You can help! You can download the postcard to send to McDonalds, make a bunch of copies, get all your friends and family to sign them, and send them to the company (just make sure to let [email protected] know that you do so we can keep track of campaign activity).

This time to save Southern forests…
Who says you can’t have fun while saving the forests… And to prove our point, we have created the coolest video game since 1980!
This morning we launched an environmentally themed video game, Packaging Man, to raise awareness on the destructive impact that fast food paper packaging has on Southern forests.
Play a video game and save southern forests? That’s right… based on the old school Pac Man arcade game we’ve put a new environmentally themed twist on the classic game.
Paper company executive are gobbling up all the forests. Packaging Man must save the day and protect Southern forests! Rising up from a giant pile of discarded wrappers, bags and boxes, Packaging Man is the hero. After you play the quick game you can take action and send a message to the CEO of McDonalds and the rest of the 11 Fast Food Junkies whose packaging decisions so negatively impact Southern forests.
The paper company executives are gobbling up all the forests. Packaging Man must save the Day!

Our friends down at Arbys have decided to hold a video contest and we’re not going to pass this golden opportunity to get a word in about their packaging…. O yeah, I know your smiling now.
Here’s the gist…
Arby’s is inviting customers to compete for a chance to appear in one of its TV ads and win free food for a year. We are excited about the opportunity to send a loud and clear message to Arby’s CEO Roland Smith by posting a few video on their site about their choice to use Southern forests for packaging.
