UK Utility giant Drax, lost its courts battle and was denied a major subsidy to convert a coal unit to biomass. This decision was timed with a new IPCC report that says we need drastic emissions cuts to stave off the worst impacts of climate change…

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) released its long-awaited Biomass Emissions and Counterfactual Model Calculator and an accompanying report Lifecycle Impacts of Biomass in 2020 report. The findings from the tool and associated report confirm what U.S. and European ENGOs have been claiming for the last few years – that burning forests for electricity is bad for our climate.

In just the last two years or so, the wood pellet export industry in the US has exploded to meet spiking demand in Europe, where utility companies are phasing out coal and phasing in wood as a primary fuel source for electricity.
