June is the month in which we honor a historical moment in time across this nation.
We stand together in solidarity and recognize the day that slavery ended in the United States: June 19th, 1865.
We also recognize that although slavery has ended, systemic racism and oppression have not. The continuum of centuries long pain and violence in the Black community still lives among us. This unfortunate reality is unacceptable as we strive to make the world a better place for the human race.
It’s important that we center the experiences of those who continue to carry those memories of their ancestors with them each and every day.
Juneteenth is a historic and important day. The world is opening its heart to acknowledge the meaning of this day. We here at Dogwood Alliance recognize the importance of Juneteenth, and we would like to honor the experience of people on our staff and in the communities we serve.
