Polls show that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) folks are less likely to engage in outdoor activities. Currently, they represent less than 15% of the outdoor community. There are several reasons for those numbers, but the lack of diversity in the outdoor industry and in leadership is one.
Black-owned businesses often have a more difficult time than their counterparts when trying to become a successful business. BIPOC outdoor stores have an important role in facilitating access and representation to the outdoors for BIPOC community members. We did some research and found nine outdoor spaces, between brands and stores, that are working to make the outdoor industry a more diverse and inclusive community.

Seirus Innovation
If you’re a person who loves spending time outdoors, goes on winter hikes, or plays winter sports, then you should check this gem among outdoor businesses. Mike Carey, an avid skier, was not happy when his new ski boots wore out after five days. He decided to do something about it. The result was the creation of Seirus Innovation.
This brand offers cold weather clothing and accessories you’ll need if you want to spend time outdoors during those frigid winter months. Their clothing uses advanced fabrics to make useful products like rechargeable heated gloves and innovative face masks, among other things. Alluvia Packraft was co-founded by Mariana Cevallos, an immigrant from Peru. When she moved to Colorado in 2015, she became an outdoor enthusiast. That love for the outdoors encouraged her to start up Alluvia. You can find their products on their online store.
Outdoor Element
Mike Mojica, a proud member of the Laguna Pueblo tribe in New Mexico, was a mechanical engineer who used to work in the aerospace and military industry. Upon moving to Colorado, his passion for the great outdoors inspired him to found Outdoor Element.
Outdoor Element produces survival and adventure supplies that includes camp kitchen gears, organizers, and multi-tool carabiners among others. These products are great for outdoor education and the whole outdoor community.
Allmansright
This company was founded by Livio Melo, who’s Afro-Latine from the Dominican Republic and Jennifer Jacobson, a half Filipino-Swedish immigrant. The two run this company in a 100 square foot space in The Bronx. This BIPOC-owned outdoor gear shop makes ultralight gear for a sustainable world.
Livio started making his own ultralight outdoors gear for personal use. He liked his creations so much that he decided to start making it for others. Some of the gear available includes food bags, stake bags, cross bags, among many other options. Visit their website to find more.
Lukafit
Lukafit was founded by Mbali, a Black woman with South African heritage. The name is a tribute to the founder’s South African heritage since Lukafit is partially derived from the Zulu word juluka, which means “to sweat”.
Lukafit offers inclusive active wear for women of all shapes and sizes. On top to that, their bright and colorful designs are offered in vibrant colors with fun patterns (silhouettes of women exercising).

WhitePaws RunMitts
Susan Clayton, an avid runner, founded WhitePaws RunMitts when she was not able to find gloves or mittens that cover her fingers and thumbs to keep them warm when training during cold days.
She designed mittens using high quality fleece since fleece works better than its regularly knitted alternative. Also, a special feature of RunMitts is that you can flip the top of the mitt to cool down and regulate airflow without having to remove the mittens completely.

This was the first Black-owned outdoor gear store in the United States. Located in Stephensville, Texas, SlimPickins Outfitters was founded by Jahmicah Dawes. His love for the outdoors started in college. Later, he decided to open his own outdoor gear store, marking a new milestone.

Located in Hingham, Massachusetts, this store offers outdoor attire and accessories. It’s owned by Mark Boles and Ponch Membreño. They work with sustainable and independently owned brands. Some of their brands are even certified B-Corp. That means they meet high standards set on employee benefits, supply chain practices, and materials used. They carry a wide selection of products within those brands.
Intrinsic Provisions features a couple of “anchor” brands that bring customers in, giving them the opportunity to introduce the customers to newer brands. David Boone founded this bike shop on the West Coast specializing in custom built bikes. They are proud to offer comfortable and affordable bike options that can match your style.
